Strong passwords with letters and numbers only, for sites that reject special characters.
Some banks, government portals, older systems, routers and smart devices refuse symbols like !, @ or #. This generator creates passwords from letters and digits only, so they're accepted everywhere, and makes up for the missing symbols with extra length.
Less than most people think. Strength comes from the number of possible combinations, and length adds far more than a bigger character set:
| Password type | Length | Approx. entropy |
|---|---|---|
| Letters, numbers and symbols | 12 | ≈ 75 bits |
| Letters and numbers only | 12 | ≈ 71 bits |
| Letters and numbers only | 16 | ≈ 95 bits |
| Letters and numbers only | 20 | ≈ 119 bits |
A 16-character alphanumeric password is stronger than a 12-character one with symbols. The live entropy readout above the controls shows exactly how strong your settings are.
Yes, as long as it is long and randomly generated. A random 16-character letters-and-numbers password has about 95 bits of entropy, far beyond what can be brute-forced.
Usually because of old input-filtering code or a legacy system behind the website. It's a limitation of the site, not a sign that symbols are unsafe.
